Core-aerate a Connecticut cool-season lawn while the grass is actively growing and can recover. Late summer into early fall is often the strongest window, especially when overseeding, while cool spring weather can also work. Do not aerate saturated, frozen, drought-stressed, or extremely dry soil. Timing should follow actual soil moisture, turf condition, and the work planned after aeration.
What core aeration does
Core aeration removes small plugs from the upper soil. It can reduce shallow compaction, improve air and water movement, and create better seed-to-soil opportunity when combined with overseeding. It does not correct deep compaction, major grade failure, unsuitable soil, chronic shade, uncontrolled runoff, or a drainage system problem.

Why fall is often preferred
Cool-season turf grows actively as late-summer heat eases. Aeration can be coordinated with overseeding, and young grass may face less immediate summer heat than spring seedlings. Rutgers lawn-renovation guidance identifies late summer to early fall as the preferred renovation period and early spring as the next-best choice.
When spring aeration makes sense
Spring may be appropriate when compaction is limiting recovery, flood or construction conditions require remediation, or the fall window was missed. Consider weed pressure, soil moisture, seed plans, and summer stress. Do not mechanically work wet soil and make compaction worse.
Before and After Aerating
Mark irrigation, invisible fence, shallow cable, drains, cleanouts, and other subsurface features beforehand. After aerating, leave cores to break down naturally. Follow the seed, watering, mowing, and soil-test plan.
